Re: Jeep Realiability
Actually, it's based upon the European Mondeo (Contour over here) and hasn't
been well received by either the Jaguar faithful, the press or the public.
It's another one of ex Ford CEO Jac Nasser's decisions that were forced on
everyone. Those with any knowledge of the business knew it would fail. It'll
take them ten years to undo the damage done to the brand.

Re: Jeep Realiability
I see a fairly good number of the X types around here.
Oddly enough, on a direct query to two different owners,
neither knew it was a all wheel drive. Personally I think
that says more about Jaguar than the merits, or lack thereof,
of the car itself. Can't be a realy Jaguar engine, though, no
big oil slicks anywhere under the parked ones, no radiators
puking fluid on hot days....

Re: Jeep Realiability
No, the days of Jaguars shorting out & puking fluids are long gone.
Unfortunately Ford threw the baby out with the bath water where the S &
X-types are concerned. Both are simply Ford platforms with revised
suspension tuning and tarted up styling, sort of "Faux-Jaguars" as we have
come to call 'em.
Fortunately for Jaguar long term, both cars have been marketplace flops
because the target customers either know the difference beforehand, or find
out the scam from the press. Replacements for both cars will most likely
have their own, dedicated platforms. There's a big fight going on at high
levels right now but the purists have won from what I'm told.
However, all that aside, the new XJ8 (big Jaguar Sedan) is a masterpiece,
mostly because the Ford bean-counters were kept far away from that design
team. Former BMW Exec VP Wolfgang Reitzle became head of Fords Premier
Automotive Group in early '99 and was the main man on the new Jaguar XJ. He
fought off many attempts by the Ford finance hacks who wanted it to be based
upon the S-Type platform to save money. Apparently Reitzle did his job so
well they drove him out of the organization!

Glad to see that. I have no problem with Jaguar technology being
used in the Lincoln LS, but other than wiring, reliability, etc.
I would much rather let the Jaguar folks do the mechanicals designs
thanking Bill Ford in advance, etc. etc. I guess the X-type isn't
a bad little car, just kinda pricey and not really a competitor in
the price range. I like the looks of the front end of the S-type,
but having once lusted after a real '61 3.8S, well, it would kinda
be like getting a blowup doll of Christina Ricci rather than the
real thing.

Yah, if the stock market ever comes out of the toilet, the big
Jag XJR is well ahead of any new Grand Cherokee on my wishlist.
Lighter than the S type, can't recall if also lighter than the
X-type. And stiffer.

Re: Jeep Realiability
The Ford family provided the impetus to buy Jaguar in the first place and
aren't likely to see the investment wasted. Actually my friends at PAG say
the '03 S-Type with the ZF gearbox and 4.2 engine, new interior, etc. is the
best car they're building. Unfortunately it's now the car it should have and
could have been at the beginning.
