Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

Hey guy's, back from a week of relaxation in the Pass.

Sorry to hear about the wingman Mike, hopefully it doesn't happen again. Champion bloodline usually means inbred till it's retarded.
I still think if you pinned the broken piece it will help hold it in place a bit better than just the JB when the pressure and heat are building up in the tranny but hopefully it'll hold up until you can get the 5 speed figured out.

Willy, welcome to the board! and welcome to ZJ electrical hell...I mean, hope you enjoy the Jeep :)
Sounds like your voltage guage is just dying. Pick a part special, the guage in mine has died twice so if your getting 14.3 while it's running I wouldn't worry about it to much.
When your headlights and dashlights start to flicker let me know and I'll tell you how to fix it.

Craig, post up some pics to put us in the Christmas spirit, mind you if I have to go into one more store that's been playing carols since the day after Halloween I'm going to scream.

So the year end camping trip went great. I'm very impressed with the IRO skid, I completely missed my line coming down a drop and the Jeep actually dropped onto then slid across the plate and onto the sliders with no damage to anything other than the muffler/ tailpipe itself and it needed to be replaced anyways. The factory plate would have been a permanent part of what was left of the T/C. Hit hard enough that I thought I relocated my butt up around my shoulder blades. (Note to self: Fire #1 son as spotter)

The only other casualty on the trip was just after we got home and started to unpack, #1 son procceded to drop our brand new 40D into the Crowsnest River trying to get a picture of all the Jeep's on the trip.....
I've offered him for sale here before, if anyone is interested I'm willing to negotiate a very reasonable price for him. :)
Hopefully some of the other guy's have some pics of me on the bank so I can post them up.

Welcome back Dan....
Your trip sounds like an excursion to say the least...

Everything seems to be ticking like it should now...Just have to test the grid in the rear window as the resr defrost isn't working. Got the battery gauge figured out. seems the interior light was on all night, (no fault of mine) causing severe drain and she has worked herself back up to full power...I have to get the rear hatch latch secured and fix the lock actuator which isn't working...
At our local meet on sunday, I waz pointed to a reputable wrecker in our area that has many Jeeps in stock, so it's sounds like an outdoor shopping event soon...

Willy

When you live in an area like this things tend to get a little hard on the Jeep at times. :)
Glad to hear the guage wasn't anything major, electrical can be a real pain at times to deal with.

Replaced both side marker bulbs on the 95' ZJ, 4 in total. I now have orange lights! I'm taking her to the Jeep dealership garage tomorrow for an inspection. The guy who's going to do the work on her is a ZJ fan, so lucky me! I'm hoping everything is fine and just minor things to fix that I can do at home. Let you all know tomorrow!

Looks like a fun time was had and for a good cause too. Some great pics in there.
Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the Edmonton toy run this year, as long as something stupid doesn't happen at work.

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

Mechanic called with the details of his inspection......my heart sank! He says this needs attention: Track Bar, Link Kit, (2) Shocks, (4) Damper, all of which I am getting done for a rip off of 1400$ all in. Other things that needs to be done that I can't afford right now: Front and Rear Pinion, Front Disk, Rear Dif Seal, Transfer Case, Rear Brakes, Rear Disk Plug, Brake and Power Steering Flush. I'm living in a motel right now and just moved to Canmore, so I can't do anything myself. He says if I was to get everything done, 2600$ without tax! **** ME! And I still have to buy winter tires.....

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

Wow! is he restoring the body as well... tell him to get ya running on the road legally, who cares of a rough ride for now... just get ya rolling again... upgrade it all later on down the road...

Looked like a lot of fun Craig, i really wish i had a group around here to ride with...

Today was just a cruse in the jeep down for my inspection, just got some used tires that'll survive till i throw on the lift so i can fit the new tires to the lift...

I had to learn someone on their brand new JK and fancy brand new unused winch on the front... got the cable out, attached it to an old Antenna Tower anchor and click the button and hear a little pop... solenoid gone out LOL...

joked around how he would get unstuck now, and he'd call a buddy... i showed him my a come along, showed him a snatch block... all these things he's never seen or used, so we get into basics of rigging then he asks one of the fun questions in winching...

"what do i do when i've got nothing to hook to..."

make a dead man's anchor... "what the hell is that"
"you dont want to know... basically digging a hole, burying a big rock, a log, or your spare tire... and using that as your anchor to winch off"

these are the people i run into, complete noobs that have mean looking rigs but dont know anything about them...

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

IKA, there is a Jeep club in Canmore, can't find the club name right now but one of the members works at the heli/ rescue center there. Someone may have a shop you can use and help wrench on the Jeep. They'll also know where to get the parrts the cheapest around there.

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

Unfortunately it's this type of guy that is out tearing up the countryside that all the responsible wheelers get lumped in with. Maybe after your demo he'll realize there is more to it than just heading into the trees and pulling it into 4lo.
I have a 25lb boat anchor as a dead man also works great in sand, Even though I carry a shovel I hate digging holes unless I have to. Just lazy I guess. :)

CrazyWJ242 11-18-2009 08:57 PM

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

Last time i dug a hole to get myself out i had to put a 6 pack into it... and a treestump we found down trail a bit. a boat anchor would be ideal, just have to dig it into the all abit and pack it in and should be good to go

I just hate when guys have gear i could benefit from, and they just don't know how to use it... like seriously he asked how is it not going to pull my jeep towards you if i winch you in... like really there should be qualifying questions before he should be able to attach that to his rig...

I sent him an email with a link to the winching basics Warn put out... hopefully read and learn something... he seemed really curious to know...

it sucks though im going to be stuck here this winter... i dont know how im going to retain my sanity... :alcoholic:

Check out The Edmonton Jeep Community to, there's a bunch of guy's from Calgary on there and they may be able to put you in touch with someone out there or even come help themselves, If I wasn't up in McMurray right now in the middle of a cycle I'd come give you a hand.

Mike, you got a Timmie's within driving range and your still wearing shorts and t-shirts...and your going to go crazy? Come on up to McMurray, I've got an empty room you can use till you get tired of the cold. :)

CrazyWJ242 11-19-2009 09:11 PM

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

I though i made a post here... sheesh

Well Dan believe me if i could make it up there id certainly take you up on the offer... the closest timmyho's is along the way too (1/8th of the journey!)

my biggest problem here is simply im miserable, its not like home where i step outside and have a million things to do... i cant even go outside and enjoy the view, cause theres nothing to see...unless i want to go pick cotton/tobacco, or play in the mud with the pigs im pretty much screwed out of fun things to do without taking a hour or two trip away... its just not the place for a guy like me...

so its save up the cash and bail...

one of the nicer things about working at best buy is that they are everywhere... and so long as i build a good reputation for myself, id probably get a good reference from my supervisors and managers, so i could probably go anywhere, and try and find a real job/get back into my security career...

Its just one day at a time... :alcoholic:

Put in a new drivers side CV joint in my buddy's ZJ... as well as two new shocks up front... no biggy...

these guys were trying to take the knuckle off to get the CV joint out... LOL
i figured right then and there that they really could use a hand LOL

Good thing you happened along when you did, alway's nicer when someone knows whats happening.
I know where your comin' from, when I'm in McMurray I give up 95% of what I like to do. I'm really looking forward to this spring. If everything goes right for a change the closest I'll ever come to this place again is Edmonton.

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

Looking to head down to Calgary then?

Im wondering if i should even bother with attempting to patch up my 42RE...

i was looking at don's old Tremec 3550 (manufactured by Borg Wagner) (since he put in a viper spec T-56 in the mustang) it appears to be the same bolt pattern as the 42RE, but im really wondering if i can remove the bell housing and shift fork and place it onto a NV3550...

this is were i've got to have the three trannys side by side to see what all im getting myself into...

the main benefit to the T3550 is that i wouldn't have to play with the hydraulic clutch and be able to install the clutch no problem :alcoholic:

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

Hey Everyone,

Question for you all, what's the deal with cold air intakes? I search the net and got a bunch of mixed feelings. Some say it does a difference, some say it don't. What do you guys think? Also, I got the same mixed feelings about performance chips and exhaust systems. If they are all crap, then how does one increase HP?

CrazyWJ242 11-21-2009 07:47 PM

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

https://www.jeepscanada.com/forum/me...08-1543-00.jpg

well i've got one... heres what you need to understand about "cold air intakes" and how they work and why and why they may not.

#1 is the wonderful thing called vacuum
this is how much air the engine is trying to suck in while running... Engines are Air Pumps, (Air Intake and Exhaust system) if you have nasty restrictions in the system on either side, the vacuum wont operate efficiently (think of blocking the hose on your vacuum cleaner)

Alot of factory air intakes are very restrictive, so thats where a "cold air intake" would be beneficial.

#2 getting into the cold air aspect. basic thermodynamics indicate Hot Air Rises, (and of course heat coming from the engine, radiation and will heat up the air around the engine) so alot of these cold air intakes pipe down into a wheel well or behind a headlight and pull air that is not affected by the engine temperature.

Colder air is more Dense, offering significantly more combustion than warmer air, this can yeild more HP which is likely to be an efficient burn of the fuel used, not necessarily more fuel. (02 Sensors will adjust all of that for you)

#3 another thing to consider is actual length of the piping used, shorter piping will offer higher throttle response since theres less distance for air to travel from the Filter.

#4 Ram Air... this is a tricky one, "forcing" more air by having a nearly direct airflow to the engine with minimal restriction could yeild more power but i cant see how much more than an efficient "cold air intake"

#5 Forced Induction... this works right... how does it work, well your pumping the air into the engine, this causes less work for the engine itself, so it can pump out air more quickly... and thats our segway to the next one.

EXHAUST.

Simple Horsepower Mathmatics.
Air In + Air Out = Horsepower (not necessarily efficiency)

you know where your vacuum cleaner blows out all of the air... well if you block it all up, it'll barely suck anything in! (like it does with a dirty filter but more on that later) the flow in and out has to be somewhat equal to be efficient. so if you have a restrictive exhaust with a ton of bends you could be hurting more than your helping... and Im not going to get into tuned headers LOL but yeah theres alot you can do to get the most out of the exhaust)

where was I Ahh filters... the things most people complain about...

#1 K&N Filters suck as a filter. they'll let in more dirt than just about anything else out there...so thats where a bunch of grumpy old men will go on about it. paper filters are great filters but offer significantly lower flow rates... this may increase the vacuum again, which means its reducing the flow.

#2 these things will reduce low end torque... not necessarily true, you can set it up so you can have power where ever you want it in the power band really, its just alot of figuring out how your machine is running...

as far as tuners&chips go it'll only estimate so far, the best method is to dyno tune so you can see exactly how much and where you need it, its not something thats available on all jeeps...

As far as my Jeep goes, its got quite a few things going on for the power its making. and i'll cover that in a new post lol

CrazyWJ242 11-21-2009 08:18 PM

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

Ok i've got a 4.0L great engine, love the thing. theres a ton of work to do to it but...

you've got a 5.2L right... theres a couple things available for it... and ones practically free.

http://www.dakota-durango.com/aftermarket/aps.jpg
5.2L and 5.9L throttlebodies

https://www.jeepscanada.com/forum/me...rottlebody.jpg

basically using a Dremel to cut down the walls on the top of the throttle body, the walls are there to protect it... but why... its got a cover protecting it...

what does it do:
when your at partial to full throttle it'll actually be able to suck in extra air and bring it down into the engine, much less restriction. (then theres half shaft mods, countersunk screws and sharpening the plate that will yield more power)

Another thing you can do is put in a lower temperature thermostat... 180degrees is what most people will put in... I have the name crazy for a reason... i went 160 degrees... it kills MPG but its a real feel 10 hp there with the 160... again the lower engine temperature, colder denser air which burns more efficiently...

Yea i did, i think the one im looking at might be just a little bit bigger... i dunno, i probaby sit a little closer to the dash than you do, so it might be in the way for me... i might disconnect the F250's cobra and mock it up and see how it feels...

i like that its out of the way, so and the lights shouldn't be too bad down there... its looking like it could be the ticket...

Hopefully Monday I'll be posting pic's of the newest aquisition.
Good luck with the bumpers. Wish I still had all the gear at the shop here, was hoping to make a rear one with storage inside for u-joints, axles, etc. so it wasn't bouncing around inside.

should look into cutting out the stock spare tire tub and fabricating up a storage bin under there... thats my next big project i have in mind... biggest hurdle i can think of is the gas tank location... and how its mounted... sorting that out and building the bin around it

did someone pick up a TJ?

04WJGuy 11-26-2009 08:09 PM

Re: What Did You Do To Your GC Today

One of the guy's on JF did this already. Moved the tank up and left enough room to put his straps and shackles under the floor.
It's pretty amazing how much ground clearance you get doing it and it's not a very difficult mod.
I forgot to change my sig back, the TJ's price kept going up for no reason. :(
