Ping Mike Romain
Mike, I know you have an 86 CJ, T-5, and I know you have researched this
issue. I have been going back and forth about which fluid to put in mine,
and finally ordered a few quarts of Redline MT. I recently noticed in my
Haynes manual that the suggested fluid for the T-5 is "Jeep Manual
Transmission Lubricant (part No. 4874464)." I did a search on 4874464 and
came up with this Penzoil product

I just wonder what your thoughts are on this? Also on the Redline MT?

Thanks for the response, Mike. Well, I just put the MT90 in -- syntehtic
75w 90 "real" gl4. The fellow who had the Jeep before me said that the
tranny was recently rebuilt, so I am hoping the seals hold up to the
synthetic. The stuff I drained out was clearly gear oil, but sisnce I had
no way of knowing what it was, I felt I had to change the fluid.

Make sure it is made for transmissions, not differentials. I had a
bugger of a time finding any that didn't already have the limited slip
additive.
I ended up using a semi synthetic mainly because that is all I could
find that day AND I just put all new seals in the tranny. I certainly
would not have used a synthetic with the old seals.
My book also says you can use a GL5 for topping up, but to use the GL4
for a change.
