To me any leak that shows up because synthetic oil cleaned the sludge
that was blocking it, is a small price to pay for knowing that it will
never sludge up again. Not to mention that it diagnosed an existing leak
for me (hypothetically speaking; because I've never seen an oil leak
occur, or get worse after putting synthetics in).

I have had Mobil 1 in 6 or 7 vehicles and my 88 YJ and haven't seen any
leakage, or increase in leakage in the case of one Dodge pickup (very
minor rear main leak that has stayed very minor). Or my Boss' YJ (which
leaked like a sieve before I switched it to synthetics, and still leaks
the same amount about 1 quart per 200 miles after the switch).

Re: Opinions on Fram Toughguard oil filters?

I put mobil 1 in my YJ when I bought it at 189000 miles not leaking oil and
it still doesn't leak oil at 194000 or so miles. If it didn't leak in the
first place, it shouldn't leak afterwards. See the oem website for this.
The oil was changed every 3000 miles by the PO so I guess it all depends
on who owned it and how they maintained it.

Re: Opinions on Fram Toughguard oil filters?

That's a pretty good assessment (good movin' parts + good maintenance =
good whatever's in it). But, to put a little twist on an old, tired engine
that doesn't leak yet, here's the idea.
If you have tired seals that don't leak and weren't taken care of, the
crankshaft, for example, can build up a film that will take up a gap that
might exist between the crank and its seal. That film's what is called a
"faux facade" or "false face". Don't ask me why they used French terms but
it might have something to do with the marvels of French engineering:)
Anyways, if you put a pure synthetic oil in the engine that does a great job
at cleaning the moving parts, it'll clean that filmy layer right off the
crank and leak a gap between it and the seal. Bam! It starts leaking. So,
in your case, you're just fine because you've done a bang-up job at taking
care of everything. But, in the case of a neglected engine, it may show you
the spoiled fruits of lacking labor. It's just like this guy who swears by
the Magical Mystical Voodoo Oil.
My buddy swears by the stuff and says that his motor is in great shape
because he adds it at every 3,000 mile oil change... Well, DUH! I think
you could swap out Brent sweet crude every 3,000 and have a good motor:)
