I wonder if there is any connection between pride in ownership and vehicle
repair. You would think that somebody who liked their vehicle would take care
of it more than say....somebody who only used their vehicle for pure
transportation.

I like the berakdown statistics the Swiss Touring Club is publishing.
The Club operates a nationwide fleet of mobile mechanics to get you
going again after a breakdown.
The statistics counts the number of vehicles with a breakdown compared
to the complete fleet in operation.
In the last decade Subaru, Tojota and Mercedes have been leading the
pack with sometimes considerable margins. French brands are the worst.
(despite this trusty Citroen Xantia is running reliably and comfortably
with its air-pressure suspension).

Couple of thoughts:
1. What is the cost of parts in the UK relative to the US?
2. Are we talking dealers or independent mechanics?

The most expensive repair I've had on my Jeep so far was $600. The radiator
plugged up on my way out of town on a 1000 mile road trip that couldn't be
postponed, so I needed a dealer to replace it on the spot. For more routine
stuff, I found a mechanic that works cheap, as long as you don't need it in
any kind of hurry. For example, replacing the valve cover gasket was $60
including the part.

Depends on the climate and conditions. The UK tends to have gentler weather
and better roads than the US, so probably makes less sense there.

sadly, people today buy cars so they can 'look good' but this makes no
sense. i don't know how many times i smack my forehead in astonishment
as seeing a Ford Explosion or whatever the fsck they call that thing,
lowered and 22" rims and lo-pro tires WTF is that?

people who buy jeeps and use them for their intended purpose are
bviously going to put their equipment to the test more often than some
pimped out exploder. wranglers are not SUV's; they are UV's!
