Re: Got CJ7 fixed, anyone want to bush run in Ontario Ca. for acoupledays?
When you mentioned that in the morning and checked it in neutral, how
did it feel?
Was there any play at all?
How close are your angles under there?
Chunks out of caps is unusual, really unusual..... I have never seen it
before. I have seen caps that were worn right through from the cross
beating on them, but never chunked apart.
I know I am running right at the edge for angle and eat u-joints pretty
fast. I am thinking I might need some shims under the spring packs on
mine.
Just had the rear end rebuilt with all new bearings and seals and the
pinion seal is leaking already. Grr.....
I am going to go back to the shop that did the work and see what he
recommends for shims, he was the one that mentioned it to me and I bet
he can set me up 'right', he sure seems to know his stuff.

Re: Got CJ7 fixed, anyone want to bush run in Ontario Ca. for a coupledays?
There's no angle at all for my u-joint that crapped out - it's a CV shaft,
and the two joints in the Double Cardan assembly were fine. The bad joint is
the one on the right in the shaft in this picture:
http://www.4xshaft.com/images/tail_shaft/hd_conv_sm.jpg, and the pinion has
been rotated up so that there's zero degrees for this joint.
I just thought of something - the two bad caps of the u-joint were the ones
that were in the shaft - the ones that get strapped to the axle yoke were
fine, and I believe I removed those caps and slathered some grease in there
before installing the shaft simply because I could. I wonder if grease never
got from the fitting into the caps that Tom Wood's installed for some
reason?

I wonder if grease never
got from the fitting into the caps that Tom Wood's installed for some
reason?

That sure does look like a dry cap doesn't it?
Maybe the u-joint has an obstruction inside it that prevent grease
transfer?
I think I would run a wire through it just to see.
