Considering fuel costs overseas, particularly in Europe where most of the
cost is taxes, we've got it easy. Highest fuel costs ever relative to
inflation were in '81 at the end of the Carter administration. In today's
dollars gas cost around $2.90+ per gallon. I worked for VW at the time and
everyone was banking on $50 /barrel oil in '81 dollars. Turned out oil
prices collapsed, and any of the chicken littles foolish enough to invest in
oil futures, VW franchises, etc. took a bath. I'll get concerned when there
are lines at the gas station. Ain't seen one recently, but sure did back in
'74 & '79. Relax, we've been here before and the sun still comes up every
day.
