Re: ARB Rear Bumper/Tyre Carrier - Jeep Wrangler

The idea is that a different front bumper will change how the crumple zone
works and how much of the shock transfers through the chasis. I know the
trigger is not near the bumper. The other reason is that I may end up
designing a bumper with sharp protrusions, which when in an accident will do
serious damage to the other car or pedastrians. Its a stupid law /
regulations, but if I want to keep it street legal, I have to comply with
it.

ARB being Australian, is cheaper here than US. Almost everybody ends up
with an ARB front bumper (regardless of make of truck).

I might do some research on what happens when people change the steering and
get rid of the air bag. It may be a way to bypass the whole thing. I have
seen a lot of rice burners with Momo steerings and all.

TJ's airbag sensor/trigger is nowhere near the bumper so it's moot in that
application. The TJ uses an intertial sensor located under the dash just
forward of the gearshift.

Here in New Zealand, if you have an airbag then the front bumper has to have
a certificate from the manufacturer (crash test and all) saying the bumper
does not alter the airbag trigger and safety feature. Local engineering
shops are reluctant to produce one because of all the testing involved. ARB
and TJM bars certified, I think so are the Warn bumpers.

I believe here the trailer can be upto 80 percent of the gross weight of the
towing vehicle. So Wrangler would be allowed more than 900kgs. Although I
have no need for such a rating as I don't have a boat or other toys to tow
around.

Agreed, Dave. It would appear that "how well" is getting in the way
of "how safely" - more of the substitution of perception over
engineering fact.

Re: ARB Rear Bumper/Tyre Carrier - Jeep Wrangler

That is also true here, but I'm still trying to find out if that is a
recommendation or a legal maximum. However, 4x4s have an exemption from the
recommendation/requirement. So possibly a Ford F350 wouldn't be allowed to
tow very much here !
