Re: 1988 Jeep Comanche clutch hydraulic fluid ?
I use the higher temperature DOT three in all my stuff, but
Chrysler wants two, which doesn't condense as much water. Their systems
seem closed enough, not to be a problem with rust, though.

Re: 1988 Jeep Comanche clutch hydraulic fluid ?
AX15 ? what is that ? and I was told that the clutch was just replaced
in the Comanche , I can see the master Cyl. is new , I was out of tonw
for 2 years and when I got back I was going through the jeep and
noticed the fluid id the master was dirty, I used a few paper towels
and soaked up the dirty fluid and filled it bace with Dot 3 the two
days later the clutch acks like it has air in the the system , I opened
the bleeder and pumped the system clean with Dot 4 , but now don't seen
to be able to fully bleed the system , should I try running a small
hose from the bleeder valve to the master cylinder and try bleeding it
like that ?

To bleed the system you can do as you describe by just opening the
bleed valve down below - but have someone standing up top to keep the
master cylinder topped off. Just plain gravity will get most of it
but you may want to make a pass like you would with brakes: slowly
press pdela to floor and hold, open bleed valve, close bleed valve,
release pedal. Make sure the mc is full before you do this - I doubt
you could get two full passes without sucking air as that is a pretty
high volume operation.
Since you got lots of crap in the master, you may also have a problem
with that same crap holdiing a small valve in the master cylinder open
a little bit. I originally put a used clutch set from a 94 YJ in mine
when I swapped out the Pugeot 5-spd for the heavier AX15. It slowly
turned the fluid black as you describe. I found a rebuild kit for
both the master and the slave, so I took them apart a couple months
back and found a big wad of built up gunk in the master cylinder. At
the very end of the plunger assembly, there is a rubber plug that
closes when you step down - the crap had buitl up so that it didn't
close completely until you got a fair amount of pressure on it. I
played a bit and cleaning the master thoroughly got it to working
right again. Went ahead and put the new kit in anyway, but I have no
doubt it would have worked without it, at least for a while.
Note - I replaced the internal slave with an external. You can't
rebuild the internal ones

Re: 1988 Jeep Comanche clutch hydraulic fluid ?
Hi Curt,
Try cracking it at the master, and bending that stupidly designed
loop higher than reservoir down as you bleed. I've many times had to use
a pressure bleeder in that the master's return spring wasn't strong
enough to move cup back to the intake hole.
