On a related question...... With an automatic is your transmission safe as
long as the fill tube in the engine compartment is above water?

This depends on your definition of "safe". Water can seep in as long as any
of the seals or even gaskets are under water. It is not as bad as a manual
transmission with no vent tube though.

I have seen some nasty brown sludge come out of a Jeep automatic that
went swimming. It was on a CJ though.
Someone commented once that there was a button vent inside the bell
housing on some trannys, I don't know what the new ones are like
though.

went swimming. It was on a CJ though.
Someone commented once that there was a button vent inside the bell
housing on some trannys, I don't know what the new ones are like
though.
