Re: Rubie Locker pumps!!!!
The 'valve' would work like that 'if' it was vertical and 'if' the Jeep
was perfectly level. Other than that, it just traps air under the cap
to hold water out. The ones I have seen were mounted horizontal which
is something like having ---- on a bull. As much use anyway.

Re: Rubie Locker pumps!!!!
My understanding is that there is a spring loaded ball that lets air seep
out as the trans heats, but prevents water from getting in. It keeps water
out in two ways, 1, the spring pushes the ball against a seat, and 2, the
vacuum that is created when the hot transmission cools works to suck the
ball against its seat.
There might not be a ball, just a small plate. But the plate would still bet
sucked against the seat, or fall against the seat, when the cold water came
along.
The hole isn't very large, and it wouldn't take much air pressure to keep it
from getting in, and a small brass or copper plate that covers the hole will
keep the water out.
If the vent is on the side though, I agree it might not work very well, but
my vent is on the top ...

The breather is a very simple device, and they all look like the

Your CJ should have come with a vent hosed up and attached beside your

Re: Rubie Locker pumps!!!!
The breather is a very simple device, and they all look like the
one being modified at: http://www.getahelmet.com/jeeps/tech/waterproof/
Your CJ should have come with a vent hosed up and attached beside your
battery, if it's like a Real Jeep.

Re: Rubie Locker pumps!!!!
God damn it Bill, there is no vent hose on the transmission, Real Jeep or
otherwise. There is a vent hose on the tcase, and each axle. I can't say for
sure that there has never been a breather hose on the transmission of
earliler models, but I know without any doubt that there is no breather hose
on any transmission used after 1976, unless the owner of the vehicle made
the effort to install one. The transmission has a small valve that lets gas
out of the trans, and presumably is able to keep liquid from seeping in.
Having a vehicle stall in deep water may be able to defeat the valve, but a
simple water crossing should not present any problems.
