I need one because it is my civic duty to be prepared to report with an
appropriate weapon, ammunition, and other gear in the event that the
militia is called up. I also need it in order to defend my family, home
and belongings from looters and other criminals in the event that
another disaster like the '64 quake hits, and lastly so that I can
resist a tyrannical government when it finally comes to that. I'm not
particularly worried about gangbangers; when they see one of their
colleagues go down with a .458" hole in his chest they will scatter. No
need for automatic fire.

You can kill a deer with a .22LR if you really want (have) to. It is
also illegal in every US jurisdiction of which I am aware, because it
just doesn't dispose of enough energy to kill it cleanly, unless one is
a master marksman (who would know better). With proper bullet placement,
a 30-06 is as near to an ideal deer cartridge as can be devised, and
will NOT ruin excessive amounts of meat. We have a responsibility to
the animals we hunt to use a round that will make a clean, humane kill.
Period. A 7.62x39 or .223 will do the job at closer ranges using proper
bullets (i.e. not FMJ) but most hunters do not like to limit themselves
to close ranges and will (should) choose a more powerful round.
Which again, has jack to do with the subject of this thread.
