Re: 86 jeep cherokee laredo
I like engines built by a local machine shop with a good reputation, if such
exists in your area. With a "factory rebuilt" engine, you never know when
you are getting crank journals 0.040" under, cylinders 0.40" over, and
excessive corrosion in the coolant passages. With a locally rebuilt engine,
you at least have your original block, and someone in your own state who
will care about his reputation.
Metal shavings in the oil pan is a hard call. It could mean normal wear,
accumulated over time and not much to worry about. It could mean the
appearance of a new problem. It sounds as if the technician is a little
"green" with respect to automotive repairs, and even more so dealing with
customers. The owner is clueless too. They really should have called you,
when the pan was off, if they were concerned about the shavings. Some
people have bad days, but it sounds as if these people are only used to
doing small jobs. It takes some expertise to diagnose and repair an oil
leak, and these people just don't have it.
I put way more money than this into a 1989 Suburban that looks like crap,
but I had good people do the work and I feel that I would up with something
worth having. In your case I don't know. Maybe take the car to another
shop with a list of your concerns. Have them double check everything that
has been done. Maybe see a lawyer.

I like engines built by a local machine shop with a good reputation, if such

I like engines built by a local machine shop with a good reputation, if such
exists in your area. With a "factory rebuilt" engine, you never know when

excessive corrosion in the coolant passages. With a locally rebuilt engine,

exists in your area.

You sir need a lawyer.
The shops around here think they can get away with freakin' anything,
they need to be hung out to dry 'Publicly'.
You paid way too much to have a simple valve cover gasket leak fixed. I
will bet that was all that was wrong besides the tune up.
You met the ultimate sleaze artists unfortunately.

Re: 86 jeep cherokee laredo
You sir need a lawyer.
The shops around here think they can get away with freakin' anything,
they need to be hung out to dry 'Publicly'.
You paid way too much to have a simple valve cover gasket leak fixed. I
will bet that was all that was wrong besides the tune up.
You met the ultimate sleaze artists unfortunately.

If it was accumulated metal * wear dust* that was on the drain plug, some of
that is normal.
If it was shavings then there is or soon will be a new noise.
I'd document what they say and when because the story may change.

If it was shavings then there is or soon will be a new noise.
I'd document what they say and when because the story may change.

Re: 86 jeep cherokee laredo
If it was accumulated metal * wear dust* that was on the drain plug, some of
that is normal.
If it was shavings then there is or soon will be a new noise.
I'd document what they say and when because the story may change.

Hi Everyone,
Thank-you to everyone who responded to my post. I am feeling much better
right now-Tom Martino "The Troubleshooter" here in Colorado had one of his

I understand your frustration, particularly on the engine warranty.
However, those mid-late 80s Jeep products were notoriously unreliable with
horrific repair rates, and yours is now 17 years old. It sounds like a lot
of different things all started to go south at once... that's the biggest
frustration and is not the shop's fault.
Hindsight does you no good, and I'm sure you're frustrated by putting so
much $$ into a vehicle.
3 yr/36k is all the warranty I got on my new Passat, so although you
thought you were promised more, it is not uncommon any more for even new
vehicle warranties not to be that generous.
Other than the misrepresentation on the vehicle warranty (which sounds
more like was made out of ignorance than fraud), most of this scenario
just sounds like rotten luck"
I don't feel crazy anymore. I am a middle-aged lady with no autotech
skills and some basic knowlege about maintenance of vehicles. I drive
alot, 100 miles a day or more--I own a cleaning business. I do know every
sound and vibration in my old jeep. With the promise of a 75,000 mile
warranty and a 4 cylinder remanufactured engine, I believed that I wouuld
have a reliable vehicle for work for the next 4 or 5 years. I love the
old jeeep. It has been in our family for 13 years-the body and interior
are in great condition.
I went to Walgreen's (5 Blocks) last evening and there is oil falling out
of the car. I can't believe it. I guess I am going to Jiffy Lube as soon
as they open 12/7/05. Again I thank you all for your supportive comments.
Because of them, in spite of everything, I feel bolstered enough to ask for
restitution.
