IMHO, this is a design flaw with ALL early 3.6 engines. Some heads will fail at 20k, some at 200k. There was no margin of error designed into the heads to withstand the potential heat created with all driving conditions. Since the left head runs slightly hotter than the right due to the direction of coolant flow, it's susceptible to the damage. Cylinder head temperatures will vary by climate, driving cycles, and fuel quality. I'd bet this problem if far more pronounced in the southern states than it is here. By tweaking the design slightly, even to withstand an extra 20 to 30 degrees, (or lower the LH head temp the same amount,)problem is solved, or greatly reduced. Again, ALL early 3.6s have the design flaw. To imply some are flawed, some are not, is incorrect, (IMHO) as it is other external factors that determine when/if the damage will occur.

Great news for all you guys and gals that have the 3.6, good to see Jeep steeping up and putting it right with an extened warranty. (although they should have just made it right from the get go....score for the customer service on this)

Hate to see fellow Jeepers possible out $$ were the manufacture should be covering the cost of defective parts.

It isn't just the 3.6 engines. Mine was the 3.8 in 2011 and it had the ticking heads. My son had a 2011 Wrangler 3.8 and he did not have the issue.
My understanding is that it was a problem within a specific build time from certain heads, not all. Even some built in the time frame do not have the issue.

Airdale,

This is a good point, although warranty extensions may be applied to certain VINs, it does not mean that the issue will necessarily be present in all cases.

I think Jeep is covering the bases.
I doubt any car co. would want to face the criticism GM is getting from their handling of recalls and ongoing issues.
Even though the ticking is not a safety issue, could a motor seize because of it?
Sloppy valves, damage or break the overhead cam!
Probably not, but what if it did and caused an accident and someone was badly hurt or worse?
It only takes once and the media would be all over it!
For Chrysler, Jeep is a strong name and they don't want any black eyes.
Good for the buyer.

Has anyone had this issue addressed without the check engine light coming on? My 2012 JK has had a slight tick for a while now but has recently gotten much worse. it appears to be coming from the top of the engine on the driver's side. Which leads me to believe it is the faulty head. The service advisor asked me if the engine light was on. when i replied no, she told me that they will not be able to replace the head under warranty without the light on. but they'd be happy to do a diagnostic for $109.99.

Does anyone have experience with this? Is there anything else that can be done to have this resolved?

Thanks
