In the position of the new pipe threaded plug or the actual head
bolt, here a stud?

Bill, thanks for the picture. It's perfect. I guess I didn't realize that
half of the headbolts were under the valve cover and the other half are
outside of the valve cover. Anyway, it IS in fact a head bolt that was
leaking! What is your take on this? I'm suprised it was loose! I've replaced
a head gasket on a Rabbit GTI once,..never on a Jeep. But in the picture,
there are other holes spaced between the head bolts. What the heck are those
for? They look like valve cover bolt holes but there are washers on the head
bolts that hold my valve cover down on that side.
