Sadly, the whole world over people want a new car every few years and would
rather pay their 20K every 5 years than pay 40K for one that would last for
20. Then they argue about spending a few extra quid on an synthetic oil
change for the same cost as a tank of petrol.

Re: Watch those parts weasles

I have shopped at the Sportsman's Warehouse in Grand Junction, and didn't
buy Chinese crap there either. I can't seem to get my wife to not shop
walmart, so have been in the one in Montrose for supplies. Still got all my
teeth, too.
I can understand a hobbyist buying a cheap caliper, the price difference to
a real one is big. So is the cost if I make a mistake machining a
crankshaft, aluminum block, etc. My mechanical Mitutoyo has lasted me 20
years before i considered it worn out and bought a digital Starrett 5 years
ago. A Harbor Freight digital that was received as a Christmas present only
lasted 8 months. I make my living with tools and don't buy crap, but did
have her buy a 150 piece "Cresecent" brand tool set at Costco to keep in her
Cherokee, and guess where it's made? Same place as the Cannon camera I
bought online a few years back.
In short, if you will trust your engine to a Chinese thermostat, you will
have no right to complain when it melts down.

The caliper I bought in GJ appears to be a high quality tool. As someone
here said, they make good stuff and they make bad stuff. We do to. There
just ain't no way to convince people that American companies are capable of
producing crap. Even German parts have a non-zero failure rate.

Steve's Tools local manger explained that to me. They cary the cheap
stuff and the good stuff. I bought a cheap box end wrench because I
needed to bend it up to get to a bolt.

Generally, always buy the best tool you can afford, and watch the sales.
Otherwise just buy the one thing you need and avoid cheap sets.

I do keep a couple of real cheap sets. They are good for oddball jobs
and as loaners.
