No transmission shares a vent with anything on any Jeep I have ever seen
or heard of.
They both need a separate vent each. They are separate units and don't
share oil either. The trannys just plain don't have a vent hose. The
later t-cases do have a vent hose.

I understand what you are talking about. I am explaining the vent tube on
the front axle as a means of telling you what the tcase vent tube looks
like. If you can find the front axle vent tube, then you can look around on
the firewall and find the tcase vent tube. The hose for the tcase is mounted
to the firewall in the general vicinity of the battery - towards the motor
as opposed to behind the battery.
Yes, you should have three vent hoses, 1 on the rear, 1 on the front, and 1
on the tcase. There is vent for the trans, but the trans has a one-way valve
that is physically mounted on the case, instead of having a hose with the
valve on the end of it. You could replace the valve on the trans with a hose
if you wanted, but if it was really that beneficial, then the factory would
have done it in the first place.

What I said was to locate the front axle vent hose, and follow it to the top
where you will find the one-way valve. Now that you know what it looks like,
look for another one on the firewall. This one will lead to the tcase.

Re: Vent tube for Dana 20 transfer case?
OK, let me try to clear up a few things.
Somebody said that the D20 hasn't got a vent hose. This may or may not be
accurate. I just do not know. What I do know is that if there is a vent
hose, it is going to LOOK similar to the one on the front axle.
Find the vent hose on the front axle and follow it up and into the engine
bay. Its top will be mounted to the fender to the side of the radiator
opening in the grill, or some equivelent location. It will be roughtly level
with the carburator. I think the idea is that if the carburator is not
drowning, the axles ought not be filling with water, if the carburator is
drowning, filling the diffs with water is merely adding insult to injury.
Now that you have identified the front axle vent hose and the small one-way
valve on the top of it, go back to the firewall and look around for another
hose with the same type of one-way valve. This will lead to the tcase, IF
the tcase has a vent hose. My D300 has a vent hose, and I made the
assumption that the D20 also had a vent hose.
