You don't have a vent tube on your firewall and it isn't missing, you've
got the same transmission and t-case in your `76 that I have in my `79.
From under the jeep, reach up to the higest point of the transfer case,
just above the rear output shaft. You'll find a piece about 3/4" high
with a loosely-attached, flat cover on it the size of a quarter. You can
wiggle it but it won't come off. That's your vent, and there's one of the
top of the transmission too.

OK, thanks for that information. I was about to go crazy trying to
understand where my tube from my battery that was tied in a knot
around the front axle and hanging out of a spot on the transfer case
had gone to and why it was supposed to be hooked up to the
transmission through a t-fitting and split off to the valve stem on my
rear passenger-side tire. :-P I wonder how much trouble it would be
to replace the vents on the tranny and transfer case with tubes with
the little vent fittings on the end so that I could go in some
*really* deep water without worrying about getting water in the tranny
and transfer case. Has anybody done this?

I may not know all the history of this post, but here is what I know.
A Dana 20 does not have a vent. It vents through the transmission. I
have removed the transmission vent (little screen thingy) and plumbed
it up to a high spot on my firewall. I did the same thing with the
vents from my front and rear axils.
