While not a fan of Al Gore that's a bit unfair.

"Despite the derisive references that continue even today, Al Gore did
not claim he "invented" the Internet, nor did he say anything that
could reasonably be interpreted that way."
While in congress, he did vote in favor of funding.
There are a LOT of reasons to dislike Al Gore, let's not make up more,
OK?

OK, so he "created" it, he didn't just invent it. Al Gore, Creator, now
that has a ring to it, that Al Gore, inventor, does not have. ;^)

It may be a bit unfair, but only a bit, what he DID say was...
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative
in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a
whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our
country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in
our educational system."
OK, if may be a little bit unfair to accuse him of claiming he invented
the Internet, but we are talking about the same guy who has hysterically
shrieked (with sweat and spit flying) "He played on our fears... he
betrayed this country...", and who is now trying to scare everyone to
death by claiming our cars are going to bring about the end of the world.
I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be bothered by someone being a bit
unfair to a nut case like Al Gore.

When you add things someone didn't do or say with things they did, you
weaken your case and give their supporters a reason to disregard your
entire argument.
