I got a pin from http://www.morris4x4center.com/cj5/t176.htm , Part #
8132407. here is a picture of the pin:

Now the problem is, it doesn't seem to fit. If you can see the aluminum
colored paint on the pin in the picture, thats how far it goes in by tapping
it gently. I'm afraid I'll bust the shift tower if I go any harder. The
other pin thats still in the tranny doesn't have the head on it...are they
supposed to have the head or do they go into the shift tower completly?

That is what mine looks like. Did you remove the spring loaded twist cap?
If not you need to. The pin should go flush to the start of the head.
