Here's a better link...and yes I went and looked. The pin is flush on the
right side and pushed in on the left. If I press down on the rounded part of
the shift cover I can align the hole on the left side. I tried to tap the
pin from right to left, no luck. I'll try again tomorrow.

That's it! There should be a pin in each side. That top piece inside the
throat will push down (spring-loaded) and twist CCW (I think) and allow the
shifter to come straight out. The pins are about 1/2" long and driven in
from the outside.
