She's right. Modern paints are waterbased for environmental reasons, and
softer than the old nitro-cellulose ones. Hence the need for a clear coat on
top.

It was actually Mike who said that about the paint not KATE. What happens in
Scotland isnt necessairly what happens in the US or Japan. Clear Coats are
to keep the paint from fading. ESPECIALLY in Metallic paint applications.
