Re: Russell extended brake lines
Bill-nope! still haven't done it. i got really side-tracked late last
year, then the holidays came and all that. i am now getting back to
it. while taking some more stuff off the frame i found a small crack
on the frame, right behind the brake metering valve. i have to take
the frame to a shop to get that fixed and then i can start painting
the frame and putting it all together. the quotes i've been getting
are around $1200 for a 4.2 short block rebuild and close to #300 for
the 4.0 head rebuild. this includes doing everything to both. new
parts too. of couse i won't know the actual prices until i take
everything in. that will hopefully happen in the next couple of
months.
it's amazing what some shops will do to take more money away from u.
don't ever go back to that other shop. ********... the shop i'm
taking mine too has been recommended by 3 diff. people. my dad's
machanic, my bmw mechanic and the shop guys next door. i feel pretty
confident they're a good shop. i also went and talked to them for a
bit and they seemed pretty cool. i think i may have the water jacket
holes welded shut too.
did they shave off a great deal of the mating surface on the head? if
they did, you may have problems with the pushrods being too long when
u install it. one quick fix for that is putting washer under the
rocker arms. that's what the guy at sierrajeep.com did-if i remember
correctly. you can always email him about that. he's a pretty cool
guy.
anyway, sorry about the long message. had a lot to say.

year, then the holidays came and all that. i am now getting back to
it. while taking some more stuff off the frame i found a small crack
on the frame, right behind the brake metering valve. i have to take
the frame to a shop to get that fixed and then i can start painting
the frame and putting it all together. the quotes i've been getting
are around $1200 for a 4.2 short block rebuild and close to #300 for
the 4.0 head rebuild. this includes doing everything to both. new
parts too. of couse i won't know the actual prices until i take
everything in. that will hopefully happen in the next couple of
months.
it's amazing what some shops will do to take more money away from u.
don't ever go back to that other shop. ********... the shop i'm
taking mine too has been recommended by 3 diff. people. my dad's
machanic, my bmw mechanic and the shop guys next door. i feel pretty
confident they're a good shop. i also went and talked to them for a
bit and they seemed pretty cool. i think i may have the water jacket
holes welded shut too.
did they shave off a great deal of the mating surface on the head? if
they did, you may have problems with the pushrods being too long when
u install it. one quick fix for that is putting washer under the
rocker arms. that's what the guy at sierrajeep.com did-if i remember
correctly. you can always email him about that. he's a pretty cool
guy.
anyway, sorry about the long message. had a lot to say.

Get that crack fixed fast!
Mine cracked there last year and just completely blew apart!
The spring hanger went right up through the frame and the crack almost
separated. I just got it fixed today and it was a big job.
That small crack meant the frame was starting to get soft and balloon
out. It then just up and blew out last New Years on a run I was on.
Crossed a deep narrow washout and bang...
