Do you have trac loc or limited slip in the rear? This is important
when considering a spare and you are correct about the spare on the back
not really liking off road bouncing much...
To check for a limited slip, you need to jack up both rear wheels and
rotate one by hand. If the other side spins the same way, you have the
limited slip, if it spins opposite, you have open differentials.
If you have a limited slip, you must use two tires the same size, so if
your spare is smaller and you get a rear flat, you must move a front
tire to the back and use the smaller spare up front.
If you have open diffs, you can use the smaller spare anywhere but be
aware of the clearance lost while using it. Believe me having to put on
a small 'silly' spare like comes with the Cherokee is 'really' no fun
when you are in the middle of an off road run....

The Rubicon comes from the factory with essentially 31x10s. They're
metric so they are a hair smaller than yours but not worth talking
about. They fit on the factory mount just fine. They will not damage
your tailgate unless you're jumping it, in which case your factory spare
would tear it up too. Save your pennies for your 4.5" spring lift.
