I only know what works for sure from experience,
I haven't tried water yet. I learned this back in the 70's and 80's from mechanics that used ATF to decarbon 'city driven' V8's as part of a major tune up or for run on like the OP has. They also used this treatment before a valve job or head gasket replace, which I have done now many times. They turn out clean as new with ATF. On my my last headgasket job I used it, but didn't drive it after before pulling it apart and got photos of some 1/16" slabs of carbon still left loose inside. It was used in every garage I ever worked in which was a few over the years. I never saw water used. I do know how water will shock clean hot metal though. I use it on dirty wood stoves and cast iron fry pans with burned on stuff or on pans to de-glaze the stuck stuff for gravy or sauce. Mike, I've never understood why some always recommend ATF which costs
money over water which does not cost money.
