Re: the reported bear attack
Having been bitten "accidentally" by a German Shepherd that knew me well, I
still have to agree with you. They can freak out, if they are not trained
properly, when they are put in a situation that they can't handle, but that
is hardly their fault. I wouldn't have one, because I wouldn't have the
patience for it, but more power to those who do.

A dog will do exactly as he has been conditioned to do, by training, or lack
of it.
I was bitten by one of my canines, but it was entirely my fault.
A drill will bore a hole right through your hand, just as it was designed
to, if it isn't handled properly.

Re: the reported bear attack
I remember my Dad and I walking into my uncle's house and getting attacked
by his German Shepherd ; it positively flew at us and came on the receiving
end of a particularly nasty uppercut from Dad that knocked it silly. The
next time we walked into the house, it pissed itself all over my uncle's
carpet :-)
It was a pretty lucky dog really - the last time Dad hit a dog that tried to
bite him it died (which wasn't his intention).

Well, as long as we're at it, we might as well praise someone who is willing
