Patriot opinions
I am about to order a 2008 Patriot, manual transmission, off road package
with 19:1 crawl to replace a fourteen year old Wrangler. Opinions? Anyone driven one of these puppies? The salesman tells me they don't order manual transmission with 25E and AWL for dealer stock, because the tightwads that tend to order manual tranny like to keep the price down. If I order it, at least I can get a red one with a sun roof. Or maybe black, damn! I love the Wrangler but it is not really a super commuting vehicle, although I still need some off-road capability. I don't really care that the Patriot has a wimpy four cylinder engine; it probably has a little more oomph than my present ride. Maybe if I order it I can get a decent axle ratio too. Thanks. Earle |

It's great for her, but I'm 6'1 and 300lbs. I definitely do not fit in it. It seems a little weak, so get the bigger of the two available four cyls if you get one. This is definitely, in my opinion a road vehicle that can occasionally navigate off road (dirt or logging) and the occasional mild snow storm. But it isn't a viable replacement for the Cherokee by any stretch. Just my opinion though. Spdloader |

Whatever happened to those days? I might have to get that Nitro I was looking at, just to get Manual plus Low Range. I realize that it is just a repackaged Liberty, but I could pretend that it isn't. It is very lean on room in the footwell. So much so I had trouble finding a place to rest my left foot while test driving. The Grand Cherokee, nearly gave me a concussion getting in the lowered roofline to sit in the raised seat. Every time. I'd really like a manual transmission, but the idea of a Ford-Escape-sized car with a decent crawl ratio, well that might even be OK with an auto. There is another set of holes in the stock Wrangler seat mounting, so that you can put the driver's seat about an inch back of the stock location. I have had mine like that for years. Later. |

They feature the 19:1 like it is something special but it is actually pretty bad. The automatic does provide more torque multiplication so 19:1 may be closer to 28.5 in practice wich is about par with many stock SUVs. I would go for a Liberty for more comfort. Other than that, I´m sure it will make it over some rough roads just fine. Jp Magazine published a review and it seemed to be pretty good overall. |

Other than that, I´m sure it will make it over some rough roads just fine. Only one vehicle made it up, a Rubicon TJ with both axles locked and 35 inch tires. The vehicle that made it up the furthest after the Rubicon was a Liberty. No other YJ, TJ or ZJ made it up as far. Maybe it was luck or superior driving but in any case the Liberty did very well. |

I agree it's not a match for a CJ but it is pretty good for mild off road use. |
