Anyone know how to set up an NNTP server?
If I did, I would set it up with the groups I like (like this one), and
pretty much grant posting privelages to anyone who asked nicely, and already
had a posting history on that group through another source.
I would also be pretty quick to filter posts from specific sources (like
google).
But, alas, I have no idea how to do this.

Most ISP's won't let you do this from home, which is why a forum might
be better. Lots of free hosting sites out there, and the forum software
is also free. If there is enough interest from this group, like I said,
I would set up a forum on a free hosting site. It would require a few
people to help moderate it if it grew big enough though.
You can look on www.sourceforge.net for software to do what you want,
but your ISP might not like you for it.
Here are a couple links that might interest you:

There are many more you can find if you Google it.

There are several reasons I'd like to keep it NNTP:
1) You don't have to convince everyone (or anyone for that matter) to
subscribe. There are already plenty of contributors.
2) In order to 'sign up', all one needs to do is point their newsreader to
'my' NNTP server.
3) If someone gets angry at the moderation policies, all they need to do is
point their newsreader to another NNTP server.
Anything coming from 'my' side of the server (posted by an account on my
server) goes through, and fowarded along to Usenet.
Anything coming in from Usenet would be from someone blacklisted,
whitelisted, or unknown. Blacklisted user's posts get deleted from my
server. Whitelisted user's posts pass through. Unknown get held until I (or
another moderator) either whitelist or blacklist the user.
In my opinion, it should take some pretty serious medication issues to get
someone moved from the whitelist to the blacklist. Recent activity is a good
example.
