Re: MSD Distributor for AMC v8 - anyone used it?
does anyone know if the edelbrock cam for the AMC 304 - part # edl
2132 has a removeable gear? If it does, I think the installer put it
on backwards, that is why the dist gear wont mesh....If the gear is
not removeable I'm at a loss again!

to answer my own question: yes the cam has a removeable gear - but if it was
put on backwards is there a difference? My mind is not engineer orientated
enough to figure this out but in simple terms it seems the gear would be the
same installed either way. For example if the gear on the cam went on like
this:
/////->motor
and you rotate it (put it on backwards)
it would still look like this:
/////->motor
Am I correct here?

Re: MSD Distributor for AMC v8 - anyone used it?
I have done some research today and here is where I'm at:
AMC used a seperate gear on the cam to drive the dist, edelbrock does not
supply the gear with their cams, therefore the builder could have put any
gear on this cam. I assume it's not the OEM gear, because my OEM dist nor
the MSD dist will fit. I cannot find a supplier of dist gears, even if I
could which one do I need? The dealer is no help here, local parts stores
are dumbfounded by the question, my only reputable performance garage in the
area says "pull the camshaft and see" - and this is what I'm trying to
avoid.
Here are my questions now:
If I pull the timing cover can I change the gear on the cam without removing
the cam? Where can I get the correct OEM gear for the cam?

Re: MSD Distributor for AMC v8 - anyone used it?
If they put the gear on backward, it could sit out of place and at least
have the reverse cut on the gears so the distributor gear will very
likely jam on it.
That gear and the fuel pump eccentric lobe are tricky to get on
correctly it would seem as you are not the first to have trouble there.
If they got the gear on backward, then they might have the pump lobe on
backward too. This will starve the cam of oil and burn it out very
fast.
The lobe for the pump has the oil slots at the front.
