More on the U-joint play
So, I stopped driving the Jeep ASAP on 12/23 when the u-joint play I
mentioned late last month suddenly became a loud clunk, noticeable when
starting from a dead stop or lifting off the throttle at freeway speed.
Looks like Carl and nrs were right on the money; the U-joint was indeed
shot...

That grinch Mr. Rust pilfered my bearings right before Christmas!
Not to worry, though: Santa put a pair of new NAPA greaseable u-joints
in my stocking, which were successfully installed today. :)

Ah, the price we pay for the failure to include a simple, $0.10 grease
fitting on the U joint!
Don't you just love it when the maker leaves off the grease fitting,
and says: "maintenance free"?

Good thing you caught it, U-joint failure can be REALLY not fun... I
dropped a driveshaft in Ft. Bragg many years ago, fortunately it was the
rear joint that let go!

Glad it was a cheap fix. :-)
