According to the New Venture Gear numbering scheme, the SelecTrac
is stronger than a CommandTrac. It is a 242, vs a 231. The first 2
indicates 2 range, the second number is strength, and the third number
is differential type.

What gives you that idea? That would be like saying the Ford
Factory Experimental Borg Warner Rock Crusher T-10 is weaker than the
T-14 used in Jeeps. Or the Corvette Muncie M-22 is weaker than M465 used
in some Jeep conversions.

I can't come up with a direct reference, but it has been posted and I
looked it up on a NV reference site: the 231 has a little higher rated
torque limit than the 242. It's not a huge amount, but the 231 is
definitely speced for higher torque loads.
