It is not illegal for your dog to bite them in the ass, when they are in the
process of stealing your property. Also the thief can't surrender to the
dog, or talk the dog out of biting him. A good watch dog knows how to apply
justice, when dealing with a thief. Just make sure he has his rabies shot up
to date.

I was on a fishing trip a while back, and I left my dog Bozo in my boat in
the motel parking lot. About 2am the manager called and woke me up. The
local cops wanted me to get my dog, so they could get a thief off the top of
a dumpster.

My dog came out of the boat when the thief tried to steel the prop. As Gomer
used to say "Surprise, surprise, surprse!" Was the thief guilty? Bozo though
so. Besides he confessed to the cops when they asked him why he was on top
of the dumpster.
