97 grand cherokee zj sputtering
I have a 97 Grand Cherokee with the 318, auto, and 4x4 and 160,000
miles. It's the Orvis package so it is quite loaded. Recently the zj
has started to sputter and act like it wants to stall out (like it is
out of gas). It will do this when cold or hot, starting up from a stop
or just cruising along (any speed). It is kind of like the fuel filter
is plugged. Is the fuel filter in the tank or on the outside. I've
looked and cannot see a filter outside of the tank. No codes are
showing even with my handheld scanner hooked up.
If the filter is in the tank is it a separate item from the pump or
integral with the pump. How hard is it to do this myself. Or should I
get a shop to take care of it. I am quite handy at most repairs but
have never dropped a tank for this. Is it real hard or not so hard.
Any info would sure help
Thanks in advance

Re: 97 grand cherokee zj sputtering
If it's not idling quit right that's probably the spark plugs,
having more than twelve thousand miles, or Throttle Position Sensor and
Idle speed step motor need to be cleaned:

The fuel filter looks external:

like the WJ it's on the cross member just forward of the tank.
