I've replaced my master and slave once each in the five years I've had
my '93.

Thank the lord, too, the internal slave is a PITA. Actually, just spent
pretty much all day Sunday replacing the clutch in the '89. Rusty bolts
and 20* temperatures make for a fun day.

As Earle said, the external slave retrofit has been done. I've seen a
write-up or two, I just don't remember where.

Earle, if you look closely you will probably find that the current bell
housing - at least for the 4.0 - will work fine with the external
conversion. I grabbed an AX15 and parts from a 94 YJ to replace the BA 10/5
in my 88 MJ and had the two bell housings side by side. The only
difference I found was that I had to re-tap the mount hole for the slave -
the tin cover for the opening used short bolts and the threads weren't
deep enough - and I had to drill out the hole for the pivot ball. The
boss for the hole was there but the hole didn't go all the way thru.
There are some other issues with the whole tranny swap as opposed to just
the clutch hydraulics, but that's another tale.
