93 jeep cherokee clutch soft
I have a 93 jeep 4.0 5spd when I push in the clutch it won't disengage
the clutch until the very bottom and reengages right away. If i out driving it hard the fluid level falls and i lose clutch but i can't find a leak It has a new master in it any help would be great |
Re: 93 jeep cherokee clutch soft
Clutch system is pretty simple: master, slave, and hose. Yours has the
cursed internal slave cyclinder that is a pain to get at. Refill the master, bleed the system well, refill again. If the level drops again, looks for brake fluid inside the cab, running down over the fuse block. If not, it's the slave. Fix is to pull the drveshafts, crossmember, transfer case, and tranny to get at the slave. If yo wind up doing that much, I'd suggest replacing the clutch at the same time. Not much more money, same amount of labor. grizfan16@msn.com wrote: > I have a 93 jeep 4.0 5spd when I push in the clutch it won't disengage > the clutch until the very bottom and reengages right away. 5 out of the last 7 or 8 master cylinders I have seen were bad out of
the box. They all leaked where the pedal shaft enters the cylinder. Thankfully we bench bled them so I spotted the leaks before we installed them. Re: 93 jeep cherokee clutch soft
i've been through three masters and three slaves (all different
occasions) in the four years I've had my YJ. aftermarket parts just don't hold up like the OEMs. at one point, my local mechanic installed a plastic slave and within a month it had developed a horrible clutch chatter. at another point, I had hydraulic fluid leaking down the clutch pedal and onto my floormat. If you have a 4.0, you should have the AX-15, which, if I recall correctly, has an external slave cylinder. check that. the few weeks before my slave cylinder completely bit the dust were hell. I had to bleed the line every day in the parking lot before I left school just to get home. by the end, i was taking the backroads in 1st gear because I couldn't get the clutch to disengage more than once after i bled the line. |

Re: 93 jeep cherokee clutch soft
Heh, my YJ is going on 13 and still has the original clutch hydraulics.
Knock, knock. The internal slave cylinder is pre-1994 as far as I know. Anything 1994 and later will have the external design. This applies to both the 4 and 6 cylinder engines. If you still have the internal design, Advance Adapters says that cleanliness is essential when servicing this unit. Steam cleaning the inside of the bell housing would be appropriate. It may be possible to retrofit the later external slave bell housing too. Re: 93 jeep cherokee clutch soft
I've replaced my master and slave once each in the five years I've had
my '93. Thank the lord, too, the internal slave is a PITA. Actually, just spent pretty much all day Sunday replacing the clutch in the '89. Rusty bolts and 20* temperatures make for a fun day. As Earle said, the external slave retrofit has been done. I've seen a write-up or two, I just don't remember where. Re: 93 jeep cherokee clutch soft
Earle, if you look closely you will probably find that the current bell
housing - at least for the 4.0 - will work fine with the external conversion. I grabbed an AX15 and parts from a 94 YJ to replace the BA 10/5 in my 88 MJ and had the two bell housings side by side. The only difference I found was that I had to re-tap the mount hole for the slave - the tin cover for the opening used short bolts and the threads weren't deep enough - and I had to drill out the hole for the pivot ball. The boss for the hole was there but the hole didn't go all the way thru. There are some other issues with the whole tranny swap as opposed to just the clutch hydraulics, but that's another tale.
