Re: 91 Wagoneer Wheel bearing replacement problems

Hi Dave,
You've got to find whatever pulled the axles and it's spacer back
against the spindle.
The fifty pounds is I'm sure, just to make sure any replace bearing
races are seated, then back off at least a quarter turn, knowing the
outer nut will take up about half that.

Re: 91 Wagoneer Wheel bearing replacement problems

Well, I rotated the hub while I tightened the inner locknut to ensure it was
seated properly. No play, and a lot less than 50lb/ft on it. The outer
locknut is tightened to 50 lb/ft. as specified.

Re: 91 Wagoneer Wheel bearing replacement problems

Hi Dave,
You missed the part about backing off the adjusting nut, so the
bearing may run in grease and not metal to metal.
http://members.cox.net/----------/bearingAdjust.jpg You should be able
to feel about an sixteenth to an eighth of an inch play at the tire's
edge.

Re: 91 Wagoneer Wheel bearing replacement problems

Many thanks for the link, much better than the Haynes manual. I only backed
it off 1/4 turn, not 1/2.
30lb/ft seems much more like it.

Cheers Bill !
