That doesn't make any sense as the tranfer case is independant of the transmission.
Failure to go into gear can be all sorts of things.
Is it a standard or automatic transmission?

manual trans guess i was little unclear trans goes into gear in all drive
12345 etc. but rev will not pull vehic, will make grinding noise similar to
say a stripped gear but cant b because works fine in 4lo and as u say trans
is unrelated to t-case.. My only guess is a linkage prob on t-case not
allowing to make transition between 2wd and 4hi.. If trans had issues wouldnt
have rev at all....

In that case I'd suspect the clutch is shot. 4lo requires less torque
to turn and therefore less power through the clutch and transmission.
