and i hope someone can make the rack ^ pinion work. That has been tried for
about 100 years, and still no luck...

I don't think you can beat rack and pinion in small to intermediate
cars. Or small cars with big engines like the Bimmer seven series with
V8 or V12 must use a drag link and idler.
