Re: 1993 YJ transfer case question
Chris,
Don't listen to this old goat, he still thinks points and condenser are high
tech!
YJs are fine and their transmissions & transfer cases last as long or longer
than any other Jeep. Look for a YJ NP231, they were sold in the hundreds of
thousands and you're bound to find one at a good price. A buddy of mine just
got one for his '93, with SYE already installed for $350.

Yeah, with luck he might find a BA10/5 laying about if he looks in one
of the late-80's models...

Re: 1993 YJ transfer case question
Jerry,
Thanks for the advice. Bill does have some good advice and links and I
appreciate them. I do know about the "real jeep" thing with him, so I filter
out whatever I consider "real jeep" technology. One of the areas I lack
knowledge in is transfer cases. I'm sure once I get inside one I can figure
out what makes them tick. I've rebuilt just about everything else that is
rebuildable on a vehicle. I did have an NP231 in my S10 Blazer that I
literally drove the hell out of, so I can attest to their durability. I also
see there are parts to make them handle even more torque capacity, so that
is always an option too. My eventual plans for whatever I buy include either
a 4.0 stroker, or a Chevy V8 conversion. I am a gearhead at heart, so most
of my vehicles end up with quite a bit more power than they started with. I
think the power increase will come in handy because most of the off road
stuff I'll be doing will involve mud. We don't have much for mountainous
areas here, but eventually I'd like to travel and do some of that too. It's
just been a long ordeal trying to find a decent CJ/YJ here without affecting
the national debt, so hopefully this one works out.

Re: 1993 YJ transfer case question
Jerry, you're not trying to tell anyone here that NP 231 is as strong as
a gear driven Dana 300, 20 or 18 are you? Which of course never used
anything, but a bolted on yoke!
