1958 ****** Jeep for sale
I am looking at a 1958 ****** , it is in good shape but it has a ticking in
the lower side of the engine. The owner said this happened a coupl of years
ago and he tought it was a lower rod bearing. Well , he dropped the pan and
replaced the bearing and it quit for a little while. He used it to push snow
and he said it lasted one winter and now it is doing it again. He thinks it
will probably ned an oversized rod. Is this a major job or a good weekend
project ?
Another note, he said it has a rare trans with 8 fwd gears and 3 reverse.
What is the deal here ? Is it rare ?
He is setting at $1500 the way it sits.
What do you all think ?
It has a good title and registration to drive on the road.
Thanks,

Re: 1958 ****** Jeep for sale
In respect to the engine noise, assume the correct fix to be regrind the
crank and resize the connecting rod. Resizing the rod involves shaving
material from the flat area where the 2 halves meet, thereby making the
diameter of the circle smaller. The circle is then honed back to it's
original, correct diameter. This could be done without removing the
engine/crank, but in all likelihood if there was damage to the rod big end
there is damage/wear out of limit on the crank as well. Not familiar with
the trans and it certainly doesn't sound familiar. A 4 speed trans with a 2
speed transfer case would give you 8 forward speeds, but only 2 in reverse.
Can't imagine a transmission being built with 3 internal reverse gears on a
small vehicle like that.

Re: 1958 ****** Jeep for sale
Sounds like the engine needs an overhaul. A quick fix may be just another
short-lived fix.
The "rare trans" sounds odd. Perhaps the Jeep is equipped with an
overdrive?
