Maybe, maybe not. For the past two winter seasons here in chilly New
England the per gallon price of diesel fuel has been higher than mid-grade
gasoline, and occasionally higher than premium. The reason given is that
home heating oil and diesel are closely related products and that higher
demand in one causes higher prices in the other.

What's irrational is people's attempt to use this idiot Diesel's stinking,
smoke belching rattling invention in passenger vehicles! It's DEAD, and
let's keep it dead!

Apprently you're either a foreigner or too young to remember the safety
*****' 55mph speed limit that Ohio Senator Howard Metzenbaum and his
Democrat cronies was forced on the USA from 1974 until the Republicans
finally got rid of it 20+ years later. (Some idiotic speed-trap loving
States like New Jersey clung to the damn thing until later than that.)
Regardless, NO ONE (except for a handful off nuts that think Consumer
Reports is an unbiased publication) obeyed the 55 MPH speed limit, lest they
spend eternity trying to get anywhere. It was a sop to speed trap cops
everywhere and made a market in radar detectors. Regardless, it was assumed
one could drive about 62 - 63 MPH without risk of a speeding ticket because
even most cops realized the law was a scam.
Now, imagine having to drive a cramped, clattering pile of $#!t diesel
Rabbit pickup from San Antonio to Midland-Odessa, TX (350+ miles), or from
S.a. to Brownsville at 55 MPH, with no A/C in 100+ degree ambient weather
and 95%+ humidity, and then having to work when you got there. The trip was
often against strong headwinds. Some 5-speed '81 or '82 Rabbit diesel
running flat out MIGHT do 60 MPH in 4th gear (forget 5th), and would get
maybe a whole 35MPG in the process. The entire fiasco was a sentence from
the devil. In an effort to relieve the endless pain and suffering of having
to drive these boxes of manure such long distances we field reps would jack
the pump timing and the mixture screw, and often swap in pre-'81 spec
injectors so the $#!tboxes might at least do 65 mph. (Why, some might even
be strong enough to do 70 if the road grade wasn't too steep.) In the
process it might get 38 - 390 MPG: Big f#!^ing deal!!!! Meanwhile a gasoline
version would cruise all day at 95 -100 with the A/C blowing cold and
cranking out 32- 35 mpg.

Flat out, or 40 mph, the pieces of $#!t got 38 MPG, big deal!
