Re: Oil disappearing?
wow i just posted about an hour ago in another thread ......
2010 wrangler Sahara with 3.8, manual trans... about 2 months ago i noticed when changing my oil that it had hardly any oil in the engine... and i mean hardly any..... about a quart drained.... I changed the filter and added my new Oil and now check every 2 weeks, low and behold last night i noticed i am down over a quart.... I topped her off.....
seems like the 3.8 likes to drink her up...
have put less than 5 k on her since last change....
ok so what is my next step........
feedback would be nice please....
are there things i should check before contacting my dealer... my dealer is a ***** , right up front, so i need to do my homework before i go there or we get screwed around....

Re: Oil disappearing?
thanks for the answer, as for the oil version, i would rather do as the manufacturer suggests as not to give them reasons to NOT honor warranty if there is a real problem.... we have to remember that dealers are in the bushiness of making money, not for keeping someone that bought a car happy it is in their best interest to NOT spend money....... i don't kid myself that a dealer is there to make sure I am a happy owner of a car i bought.... so changing oil or using additives may be a good thing for the dealers perspective.... and may work... but when it comes to OUR interests....."warranties" we have to suck it up and follow the "rules" until the item is no longer under warranty,,, then its a free for all :)
So i just want to follow the manufacturers process, and if any one knows what steps should be followed i would gladly listen,,,, by the way one the warranty expires... Oh ya i am using a diff oil.... :)

Re: Oil disappearing?
As others have noted....COMMON ISSUE on the 3.8L. Google 'oil sucking 3.8L' you will have more then a afternoon's reading on the topic.
Yes a thicker weight oil has helped some, as PCV replacement.
HOWEVER, the story is some 3.8L (mostly 07 and 08's) had piston rings installed incorrectly from a Mexico assembly plant.
My 08 was buring 450ml of oil for every 750KM. I worked with my dealer on a oil consumption test(s), PCV replacement.....was patient, and they did work on my motor under warranty, and I know run 5W20 (dealer dino grade) with no issues.
Do you homework, print of threads on the issue, and work with your dealer for warranty coverage....patience but firm, don't let them get a way pushing you off and saying it's normal.
Best of luck, keep us posted!

Re: Oil disappearing?
Been though 3 "oil watch" programs now. My consumption is 1 litre per 1900 kms. According to Chrysler, the consumption needs to be 1 litre per 1600 kms before they will do anything about it. Thus, my consumption is deemed "normal". Not sure how this can be deemed normal......

Re: Oil disappearing?
As an Owner of 6-speed manual 2011 JKU Sahara with 80K kms,
suffering from pinging and some oil burning.
From what I have gathered on the web and from mechanics outside of dodge.
The theory is that the oil gets too thin with wear, gets past the rings and burns.
Creating a smaller combustion chamber from the carbon deposits, causing predetonation below 2500 rpms. I am told the ping sensor does not kick in until a higher RPM.
The rings themselves can get carbed up, causing the situation to get worse.
Seafoam has become my friend,
I treated my gastank and it stopped the pinging right away, but would return if I didn't use High octane.
And after 3 treatments, and keeping the jeep out of 6th below 110kms seems to have resolved the issue completely.
I am waiting until my warranty is up before changing engine oil. for now synthetic 5w20 is what I use...
This has been my experience,
There are lots of different ways to use Seafoam, procedures on their website, test at your own risk.
My dealer won't help at all...
