Oops...forgot about that light :)
Slowly saving up for mine, planning on next summer for the install. Haven't re-built an engine in a couple years so I'm looking forward to it more and more as the parts pile gets larger.

Recently purchased a WJ. It had a knock and this being my first 4.7 I thought it was a cam lobe or collapsed adjuster. Looked on YouTube and seen a few with identical problem.
Hope that it was not a typical issue with these engines. Had the 4L in a Cherokee Sport and a Comanche and they where tough. Blew one up but thats another story.
Anyway the 99 G C has turned a bearing on #8 journal. I have the beast almost ready to pull. Plans are to pull the 4.7 and seperate the crank from the block. Sending the crank to a engine repair shop in Moncton as well the rod.
Hopefully will have the engine out, heads off and block seperated this week.
Thats what I have done to my Grand Cherokee today.

Usually the 4.7 is a pretty tough engine, hopefully the PO did some kind of routine maintanence on it. I like the 4.0, tough to destroy.
Hope all is well when you get it back together.

If you had of seen the oil in this engine you would have been disgusted. I removed the oil fill tube and the crud that was laying in it was not a good omen. When I removed the oil pan there was a crude oil like substance on the bottom. Sludge to the extreme.
Good news as of tonight the 4.7 is out and ready for the overhaul.
This is what I did to my GC today.....

my 4.0 was pretty much the same when I got it, pulled the valve cover and was stunned by the amount of crud in there. When I dropped the pan it was in the same condition, that's the only problem buying used, you never really know what you have until you open it up.
On that note, this afternoon is both diffs, T/C, trans, oil change, re-torque and grease everything, and rotate the tires.

Since I seem to spend as much time under the Jeep as behind the wheel I was thinking I should write a book. "The Zen of Jeep Maintanence and Repair". Could be a best seller.

Got a call from the engine shop on Friday. #8 journal was 35 thousands undersized. Largest he could do was 30. So I gave the green light to build up and turn down to standard. Crank is polished and waiting on mains to arrive on Monday. Might as well have all new bearings in the bottom before reassembly. Also he told me that # 8 rod was 2 thousands tight. Would explain the failure. Will plastigage all bearings on reassembly.

On a different note. Is the ignition key in a 99 GC chipped?

Well the mains are in. Reringed the pistons and new bearings. Plastigage each rod and it was good to go. Heads are on and torqued. Must remember to bring my in/lb torque wrench home from work for the timing and oil pump.
Getting closer to to hear it come back to life. Will order the front and rear seals in the morning so I can pick them up after work. With good luck she ought to crank up before the end of the weekend.
