Has anyone swapped out a 249 TC for a 231TC on a 1997 Grand, 5.2L

It's been done. Only issue is that if you have a VIC in your Jeep in won't work right with the 231. Most people go with the 242 as it offers all that of a 231 plus full time.

If a 242 is put in there's no issue with the VIC? cause I've got one of those. Also do you know if there's any other issues like spline count, or slip yolk eliminator or having to change the rear driveshaft?

The VIC will work fine with a 242, only need to swap some wires behind the VIC. I did the 249 to 242 swap twice and never had to change anything. If you get a 242 out of a 96-98 Grand Cherokee or 99-01 Cherokee XJ it should be a direct swap.

Do you recall what wires that you changed. Also I've got a 4" lift with about 3/4" spacers to lower the transfer case, do you think that would have any effect?

If your 249 is working with your lift then you should not have a problem with the 242. Behind the VIC in the wiring harness you'll find a set of two wire red connectors that you will need to unplug and leave unplugged. In that same wiring harness (might need to un-tape the harness a little) You will find two single wire black connectors which are unplugged, plug the two black connectors into each other.
