Canada 95 Grand Electrical Questions ( Low Voltage )

Hi all new guy here.

I just picked up a 95 Grand Limited. 288 k's 5.2L, up country suspension. Overall a decent ride. I came a long at a really reasonable price. My 96 went to the Happy Hunting Ground with 478 k's.

The new Grand had a know electrical issue. Low voltage. I was told it had a new Alt and battery recently. Any way I replaced the computer. and it got better but has not gone away. I swapped in another used alt. Better yet but still not gone.

When I fire it up for the day voltage is up around 14 by the gauge ( not the most accurate I know ) after driving a fair distance the voltage will drop and drop further at idle. To around 12.8-13 volts. Increase rpm and it comes up.

I have also noticed a nasty Alt whine on my VHF ( 2m ) radio.

Any ideas? also what should the alt be putting out. Thanks

Default Re: 95 Grand Electrical Questions

ok I have had the alt checked ( I have 3 of them ) one dead. One good with output approx 120 amps. Using an external voltage reg. At start up 12,8 - 13.0 volts. after running for a while voltage comes up. Then I am getting 14.6-14.7 above idle. At idle it drops to 13.0 - 13.2

Any ideas would be great.
