Default Lower steering shaft U-Joint Snapped

Hey, I just bought my first jeep last week and I went to get it certified today and the lower U-joint is broken but held together with barb wire... So the mechanic told me to get a whole new steering colum. Instead I was thinking this may work?

http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?partID=7808#

Can someone please help me out with this because I'm extremely new to jeeps thanks

If in fact it is the borgeson joint that has failed on the shaft then that is a great solution. Probably cheaper for you as well. Alot of shops simply do not know these parts are available so the first logical answer is replace the whole steering column

you may be able to just get a replacement joint as well dependant on whether your shaft is a servicable unit or welded. There are a few online suppliers of these and you may be able to pick them up at a local store.

1 online store with a quick search:

Greetings,
Well, IF you trust this mechanic and he's not just a "parts changer" you may have to follow his advice. Why is the steering column loose? Bad bearing? Find out just what the problem is and ask how much $ to replace the shaft and "loose" parts as compared to $ to replace whole column. Are some used colums available at wrecking yards?
Don't get discouraged, you'll have lots of fun.

I just went through the same thing. No one could find a joint to replace the one on the shaft, Chrysler wanted 400 to replace whole shaft. My jeep is not road driven so I replaced lower joint with a 3/4 drive universal.
Your best bet is to find a shaft from an auto recycle place/junk yard.
