4 or 6 banger?
Hey everyone.
New to the site but not really to older jeeps.
Sold my ****** CJ2A a few years back and am now looking at a yj.
I have done some reading on both motors, but would like some opinions.
I am looking at 87-89 yj's. Most have the carbed 6 cyl.
So my question comes down to are these carbed inline 6's that bad?
Should i just wait for a TBI 4 cyl?
Will pretty much just be a summer toy, parts store runner ect, till i have some cash to play with.
Thanks
John

Re: 4 or 6 banger?
Besides sucking in the ball department, what are they like for reliability?
The 87 i am looking at has 160k on it.
Are they knowen for lots of problems or issues besides lack of power?

Re: 4 or 6 banger?
i have a 1990 jeep yj and it had the 4.2 carbed other than the carb not wanting to work properly because of the computer controlled portion of it, i didnt have any issues with it. my brother has a inline 4 TBI and its causing him lots of problems. i agree with mattz i would also go with the 4.0 litre fuel injection.

Re: 4 or 6 banger?
I have a '91 with a 4.0 and I'm sure that's the way to go.
Every parts Jeep I ever bought had a 4.2 in it, either ran ruff or didn't run at all and few people ever came looking for engine parts. Take from that what it's worth.

Re: 4 or 6 banger?
Check out the article on this in the last Peterson Offroad Mag. I read some of it, I believe they recommended 87-up only and the 4.0 engine. But this article was awsome it went through what transfer case, diffs. engine, trany etc. too look for.
