TJ Tires
Hey Folks,
Well if you read my last post I finally bought a Jeep TJ. It's a 2003 TJ sport 5speed with both tops! and only 53,000km on the dial and full skid plates. My question is this, if I decide to put larger tires on it (I think I can sqeeze 30-31's on it) how will this effect my speedo...and what do I do to correct it? Thanks

Re: TJ Tires
Hey,
Congrats on the purchase... shoulds like a pretty sweet jeep. I'm sure it will bring you many years of adventure and awsomeness.
31" x 10.5" will fit on stock rims. You do not need a lift either. You may have to adjust the steering stops if the tires rub when you turn the wheel all the way. Adjusting these takes about 5 min and requires one wrench. There is already a million write-ups on how to do this.... should be easy to find.
31" tires will make your speedo show a slightly lower speed then the jeep is actually travelling at. We're talking a few km's here, really not a big deal.
I run 31's on my stock jeep rims and they are just fine with a minor steer stop adjustment. I personally don't plan on changing my speedo until i get much bigger tires and the speedo is way off. Just my two cents.

Re: TJ Tires
check this information on the attached website. 33's reduce the backspacing, steering stops, yes, to a point...I use my gps for my speedo and I'm running 30's...speedo is ~ -5% off...go bigger you can get different gears to adjust your speedo to the bigger wheels

To adjust your steering stops in case the tires rub, or for anything else related to your Jeep, check out one of the best technical Jeep sites on the web at Site Index.
And there are thousands of posts about speedo gearing on Google, my question is......who cares? Travel with the flow of traffic and you won't have any problems. Chances are you'll be traveling slower than most anyways. But if you do care Google is your friend. If you look hard enough you may even find a free gear set for yours here http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/take-speedo-gear-leave-speedo-gear-643981/index5.html
It's a very complicated issue LOL Speedo-Odometer, QUIZ???
