Default New Here, Couple Questions

Hey all,
new to this forum, new to owning a jeep i should say. Just got myself a 1999 jeep tj 4.0l manual. Im dumby when it comes to cars but I wouldnt say im pro either. The jeep needs a little work to make it perfectly road worthy again but I have a few questions before I begin.

First off is the most important:
Took it in for saftey the other day, unfortunately failed. Problem is the ball joints on the passenger side are pretty rough. They mech quoted me something like 500 bucks for parts, and 50 bucks for labour. Now, that seemed a little step to me. Did some searching a just jeeps and this is what i came up with. Mech said it was just my upper and lower joints that need replacing, so there should suffice correct?

Second Question:
The 4 wheel drive isnt working. I figure its the transfer case, runs in 2H no problem, neutral is fine as well, 4H doesnt get it to 4wheel drive, just stays rear wheels only. and 4L has a horrid grinding noise with a little power supplied to rear wheels only. My question is, do i go out and find a new np231 or should i try and open er up and see whats going on inside first? Further more, Im assuming a tcase out of 2.5l wouldnt suffice, i hear theres a difference with the spline count.
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks!

Ball Joints should only run you around $75-$80 each for life time ones.

Get a used Tcase. Should do the job.... you feel like cracking into the old one and do a rebuild you will have a spare one on hand or might be able to seel it.

figured for joints, went to justjeeps today and bought a set. and its gotta be the transfer case eh? i feared that, kinda a pricey fix. what should i be expecting 150 - 250 for a used tcase?
and ive been doing some research about it, im not able to use a 2.5l am i? and does the manual/auto make a difference? plus, does it have to be from a tj? cause i know a lot of other trucks used the np231.
