Default Dana 30 axle shot.

Well i did it now. I was out wheelin on the weekend and seems lke i stripped the splines on the front passenger axle. it was knocking when i turned tight right. i put it up on stands and the passenger wheel would not turn untill you turned right, and then did the jeep tart to jump around as the axle caught a left over spline. Have not pulled it apart but talked to the local driveline company and was told a axle an nest kit will be about $5-600. I geuss this weekend is now filled.

Pick up another 30 there a dime a dozen most people tring to get rid of them for bigger ones, try scrap yards first, and local offroading clubs (call them tell them what ur after surely someone knows someone can swing a deal ur way cheap) If you weren't so far I have a 30 w/3.73 and a 35 in my shed.(its a pre-'91 unit that came with a vacuum-operated CAD (axle disconnect) I dumped a complete set of 3.07's and 3.73's about a year ago. Don't pay $500-600 for them unless your looking for d44's

Darn why do u live so far away a club member is selling a set or one 30 with 3.07 for tj for $100.. So check around that wrecking yard sure wants to #$%^ you good on that price. Not sure of what year ur jeep is but something to keep in mind.
Try to avoid the pre-'91 units that came with a vacuum-operated CAD (axle disconnect), which split the passenger-side inner axleshaft into two pieces with a coupling in between. It is known that the weakest part of the Dana 30 is the 5-297 Spicer axle U-joints.

wooh! lucky you, unfortunate for me, my outer axle tube is bent!

most Dana 44's are over rated. unless its been beefed up. it uses a lot of parts as the Dana 30, aka U Joints, spindles and all that... the Dana 44 is a larger ring, 8.5", a thicker 30 spline axle, and slightly thicker outer wall... other than that it uses the same things as the Dana 30. although this is much better for wheeling around larger tires and aid a locker.

luckily there are Dana 30's for $100 all over... i have yet to find a free one though :( lol

Well the clicking sound is back. I think i might pull it apart and change out all the bearings and throw 4.10 gears in them while i am at it. The click did not start up again for a while. I suspect that it started to make the noise after the assembley grease (in the bearings) mixed in with the oil. I am stumped other then that.
